To perform well in grammatical range, which takes up 25% of the overall IELTS writing score, one must use a wide range of sentence structures and not make any punctuation or grammar mistakes.

Sentence structures and required punctuation

Note that the following sentence structures have even more categories within them that can be used to obtain a high score for grammatical range.

Simple sentences
It is an independent clause with no more than one subject and one verb.
Compound sentences
Compound sentence examples and some helpful punctuation hints between commas, colons, dashes and semi-colons.
Complex sentences
A complex sentence consists out of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. This post explores the different types of complex sentences and provides examples.
